We continued our zigzag course and arrived at Morgan’s Bluff on Andros after a spirited “3-hour tour” in the bright sunshine. The track outlined below shows our sail from Bimini on the left (west) to remote Mackie Shoal to rolly Chubb Cay to Morgan’s Bluff (and then on to New Providence and finally Highbourne Cay on Monday, February 8).
Morgan’s Bluff bay has a government dock for cargo ships, a huge water processing plant (and corresponding tankers), a few derelict ships (including this one which reminded me of Disney’s original Steamboat Willy cartoon), and a small restaurant/store/bar.
But one side has retained its natural beauty in a protected park setting with picnic tables, palapas, and a sandy beach enjoyed by locals and a handful of cruisers. No tony resort nor mega yachts here.
We all agreed we needed lunch and a nap before attempting to do anything that would require being the least bit sociable. We eventually dinghied ashore to try to find Morgan’s (as in Capt. Henry) hidden cave.
Turns out this was no great feat as there was only one road to choose from. And there was a sign pointing the way. And there were picnic tables at the site. But it also turns out that two of our traveling buds are both professional geologists so they explained how the cave is part of a karst area, formed by the dissolution of limestone by the island’s underground drainage system.
Alas, we found no buried treasure and no rum but on the walk back along the beach we came across these treasures, a large sea biscuit and a beautiful shell:
But truly, the real treasure at Morgan’s Bluff was a calm night’s sleep. Tomorrow we are headed toward New Providence Island, home to Nassau, the giant Atlantis Resort, and a history of pirates!
